Inclusive Education: Kids of Pakistan
Wow! What a variety of talent we have in our schools. I can say this because I have been working in schools for more than 16 years. Children in schools come from diverse backgrounds. They exhibit a variety of qualities and unique features just as different models of electronic gadgets. list of their talent goes like this, few can run fast or play well while others can read and write well. some have wonderful memory while some can solve math puzzles in no time. Some have singing talent while some are good orators or actors. singing, dancing, skating, gardening, stretching, or gym make the list long.
Did you notice that I am not mentioning anything about the students who do not perform well in one or more areas? Does it mean that in Pakistan students are bright to perform excellently in all the areas and they do not have any learning issues? It's not true. Like any other place in the world, Pakistan also has students who have their interests, choices, strengths, and limitations.
Many of our school systems look more closely at the academic performance which is a stagnant thought. Children unable to perform to a certain level in schools are either asked to leave the race or come up to their level of satisfaction. These systems are mostly run by learned and high ranked people, however, they lack acceptance of a simple rule of nature that DIVERSITY is The Beauty. unnecessary pressure is being posed on little brains. The quality these children possess is either never revealed or never encouraged to flourish.
In regular schools, students with special needs always struggle in one or more academic subjects. Parents are informed and pressurized to work on their children's academics. parents scold their beloved ones to make them realize the importance of the race, at times they arrange tuitions for them and restrict them from leisure activities.
Schools completed their responsibility of informing the parents about student's difficulty in learning, Parents performed their duty of talking strictly to their children and arranged tutors.
They may be worried but are they actually doing the right thing?
Why is it important that all the students forget about their interests and focus on the subjects that they can't perform well due to any natural reasons?
Why do schools and parents want everyone to race? Is it the system that leaves them with no other choice? Marks are so important that admissions in colleges and in universities are at stake. Institutes talk about merit for the admissions. Where should average and below-average students go?
Let me clearly talk to all my readers, please inform children from an early age that they need to race all the time, in everything they do as without the sense of competition they would only enjoy the learning which is not enough to survive in this system. Please tell children that we can't change the system as everyone has their own reasons. Tell them that life is a competition. Learning can be fun but if it is not, do not forget the reality of tests and assessment systems waiting to tear the young minds apart in the name of evaluation.
Unfortunately, Inclusion is a fancy term for all the good schools and institutes to admire and enjoy its attraction but there is not a single person to stand for the rights of these children so that they can have a unique evaluation system for their capabilities and proficiencies.
If anyone knows how to change this competitive system please let me know-how. will be waiting for a solution...
